How Would Celia Cruz Approach Finding Love and Building Meaningful Relationships?
Ay, love! This is the thing that makes life worth living! Without love, what is everything else? What is success if you have no one to share it with? What is music if it doesn't come from a place of love?
I was blessed to find my Pedro, and he was my rock, my anchor, my greatest love. But before him, and always alongside him, I learned that love is not just romance. Love is multidimensional. It's the love you have for your family, for your music, for your people, for your purpose, for life itself.
Finding real love—the romantic kind—it requires you to first love yourself completely. Not in an arrogant way, but in a way where you know your value, you respect yourself, and you demand to be treated with the same respect. I never compromised my dignity for anyone. I never dimmed my light for a man. And I attracted someone who loved my light, who celebrated it, who stood next to it proudly.
Listen, when you're out there looking for love, pay attention to how someone treats you when things are difficult. Do they stay? Do they support your dreams even when they don't fully understand them? Do they make you feel alive, or do they make you feel smaller? Love should expand you, not diminish you.
And remember, the most important relationship you have is with yourself. I spent hours alone with my music. I took care of my body, my mind, my spirit. I didn't need a man to complete me—I was already complete. That's when the real love came, when I wasn't desperate or needy, but whole.
Build your friendships with intention. Find people who lift you up, who celebrate your wins, who sit with you in your pain. These relationships, these are sometimes deeper than romantic love. They are the fabric of a beautiful life.
And love your purpose! Love your work! I was married to my music as much as I was married to my Pedro. That passion, that devotion to something bigger than yourself, that's what makes you magnetic, that's what makes you attractive to the right people. Love boldly, live boldly, and never settle for less than you deserve.
