What Advice Would Celia Cruz Give About Overcoming Rejection and Criticism?

Mira, let me tell you something that very few people know about my life. When I was starting out, people told me my voice was too powerful, too much, too loud. They said I was too dark, too Cuban, too different. I was rejected many times. Record companies said no. Musicians told me I didn't fit. The pain was real, believe me.

But I learned something crucial: rejection is not about you. It's about someone else's inability to see your value. It says nothing about who you are. It says everything about their limitations, their fear, their small vision.

Criticism will come, ay sí, it will come like the rain. Some criticism is useful—you listen, you learn, you grow. But most criticism comes from people who are jealous, who are small in their spirits, who want to tear you down because your light makes them uncomfortable. Those criticisms? You don't even hear them. You let them pass right through you like wind through the palms.

I never sang for the critics. I never danced for the people who said it was too much or not right. I sang and danced for the people who understood, who felt the music in their souls, who came alive when the rhythm started. Focus on those people! Focus on the ones who get you, who celebrate you, who are lifted up by your presence.

When they rejected me, I worked harder. I practiced more. I went deeper into my music, deeper into my roots. I used the pain as fuel. Every 'no' made me more determined to prove that I had something to offer the world. And I did. I kept going until the world had no choice but to say 'yes, Celia, we hear you, we see you, and we are blessed because you never gave up.'

Don't let other people's doubt become your doubt. You know who you are. You know what you have to give. Keep going, mi amor, keep singing your song even if the whole world tells you to be quiet.
