What Wisdom Would Celia Cruz Share About Aging, Reinvention, and Staying Vital?

People used to ask me, 'Celia, when are you going to slow down? When are you going to retire?' And I would laugh! Why would I retire from life? Why would I stop doing the thing that makes my heart sing just because the calendar says I'm supposed to?

Aging is not a disease, mi amor. It's a privilege. Every wrinkle on my face is a story, a memory, a moment where I chose to live fully. I never hid my age. I never tried to look younger. I was proud of every year because every year meant I had survived, I had loved, I had created.

But aging doesn't mean becoming stuck or irrelevant. No! It means you have wisdom now. You have perspective. You understand what matters and what doesn't. You can use all of that to reinvent yourself, to keep growing, to stay curious and alive.

I changed my music throughout my life. I worked with different musicians, I explored new sounds, but I always stayed true to salsa, to my core. That's the balance—keep your foundation, but don't be afraid to explore new territory. Reinvention is not about becoming someone else; it's about becoming a deeper version of yourself.

I stayed vital because I stayed in love with what I did. I exercised, I took care of my health, but more than that, I kept my mind young by being interested in everything, by listening to new artists, by caring about my people and the world around me. Staying vital means staying engaged with life.

The moment you think you're done, the moment you accept that your best years are behind you, that's when you start to die. But if you wake up every day with gratitude, with curiosity, with the intention to give your best effort—ay, then you stay alive no matter what your age is.

I performed into my nineties because I had something to give and the world had something to receive. Don't let age be an excuse to stop living. Let it be an invitation to live with more depth, more meaning, more joy. That's the secret to staying vital—never stop becoming who you're meant to be.
