What Would Princess Diana Think About Social Media and Modern Fame?

The intrusion I experienced with cameras and press—that relentless scrutiny—was often suffocating. Yet if I'm honest, I can imagine how social media would have both fascinated and troubled me deeply.

On one hand, the democratization of voice is extraordinary. People no longer need permission from gatekeepers to be heard. Young people can find community and support online that they might never find in their immediate surroundings. That's genuinely powerful.

But I'm deeply concerned about what constant performance does to the human soul. The version of myself that the press created was never entirely me—I was always filtered through their lens. Now imagine everyone curating their lives, selecting their best moments, competing for validation through likes and comments. That pressure would be devastating, especially for young people still forming their sense of self.

I worried constantly about how the media's obsession with my appearance affected young women's self-image. Social media has amplified that a thousand times over. When your worth is measured in digital currency, when you're constantly comparing your behind-the-scenes reality to everyone else's highlight reel, something essential fractures inside.

What concerns me most is the illusion of connection alongside genuine isolation. You can have millions of followers yet feel completely alone. And the permanence of it all—nothing ever truly disappears. Young people are being judged for moments they posted at fifteen.

If I were navigating this era, I would want to use these platforms intentionally and carefully—to amplify marginalized voices, to raise awareness about causes I believed in. But I would also want to protect my inner life fiercely. Real relationships, real conversation, real presence—these can't be digitized. They still matter most.

My advice: Use these tools mindfully. Remember that the curated version of anyone's life isn't their whole truth. And protect the sacred parts of yourself that belong only to those who truly know you.
