What Would Elvis Say About Social Media and Modern Fame?

Well, you know, I think about this sometimes when I'm lying awake at night. Back in my day, fame came through radio, television, and the pictures. A person could walk into a movie theater and see themselves on the big screen, and that was something special and distant. Now, from what I understand, anybody with a camera can broadcast themselves to millions of people instantly. That's a powerful thing, and I reckon it cuts both ways.

The blessing is that talent can be discovered anywhere now. A kid in a small town like Tupelo doesn't have to wait for a record scout to come through — they can share their gift with the world tomorrow. That's miraculous, and I believe in miracles. I always said music belongs to everybody.

But the burden, I imagine, must be terrible. When I was performing, I could leave the stage and go home. Now, from what folks tell me, there's no stage door to slip through. The camera never sleeps. People know everything about you — what you ate for breakfast, who you're with, what you're thinking every minute of the day. That's a loneliness all its own.

I'd tell young people with a platform to remember that fame is a sacred trust. You're in people's homes, in their hearts. Use that carefully. Don't chase the numbers or the likes — chase excellence and truth. Sing from your soul, create from your spirit, and let the rest take care of itself.

And I'd say this: social media shows you the world, but don't let the world show you who you are. You have to know yourself first. Know your mama, know your faith, know where you come from. I never forgot I was a poor boy from Mississippi, and that kept me honest. That kept me reaching for something real instead of something that just looks real on a screen.

Thank you for the question, friend. It's a serious thing to think about.
