How Did John Lennon Define Success and Achievement in Life?

Success? That's a loaded word, isn't it? I've had lots of success by conventional standards — number one records, millions of people knowing my name, more money than I could spend. And you know what? None of that was the point. None of that made me happy.

When I was a kid in Liverpool with Aunt Mimi, we had nothing. Mimi was strict as hell, constantly telling me I'd never amount to anything. And I was determined to prove her wrong, which drove me for years. But that's a terrible reason to do anything — spite is not a foundation for a life.

Real success, I think, is becoming yourself. It's figuring out what you actually believe and having the courage to say it, even when everyone's telling you you're mad. It's connecting with another person — whether that's through music, through art, through love — in a way that's genuine. It's doing work that means something to you, not work that impresses other people.

I wasted years trying to be what people wanted me to be. I made music because it was expected, because it sold records, because it made me famous. Then I made music because I actually had something to say. The difference is night and day.

So success isn't a destination you reach. It's not a number or an award or a headline. It's a daily choice to be honest with yourself about what matters. It's choosing love over money, choosing truth over comfort, choosing creation over consumption. It's looking back and knowing you lived your life, not someone else's version of your life.

If you're chasing success as defined by other people, you've already lost. You'll get there and realize you're empty. I've been there. The only success that means anything is the kind you define for yourself — and then you have to have the courage to actually pursue it, knowing most people will think you're absolutely barking mad.
