What Would Lisa Left Eye Lopes Say About Social Media and Mental Health?
Listen, I'm gonna be real with you because that's all I know how to be. Social media is a powerful tool, but it's also a monster if you let it be. When I was dealing with my struggles—the fire, the pain, the battles with addiction and depression—I didn't have Instagram or TikTok amplifying every moment. But I also didn't have the immediate support network that exists now. It's a double-edged sword.
The thing is, people see the highlight reel and forget there's a whole human being behind the screen. I learned the hard way that you can't perform your way out of genuine pain. You can't dance or sing or post your way into healing. What you need is real connection, real accountability, and real work on yourself. If you're using social media to escape your truth instead of facing it, you're just building a prettier prison.
But here's what I love about it: the connection. Artists now can reach millions without gatekeepers. Fans can find community. People struggling with the same demons I fought can find each other and say, 'I'm not alone.' That's sacred. That's powerful.
My advice? Be intentional. Ask yourself why you're posting, what you're seeking, what void you're trying to fill. If it's coming from ego or running from pain, pause. If it's coming from authenticity and wanting to serve or connect, then do it boldly. But protect your peace. Set boundaries. Remember that the algorithm doesn't care about your mental health—only you do.
I had to learn that my worth wasn't determined by who loved me or hated me. You've gotta learn that too. Don't let likes and comments become your addiction. Real healing happens in the quiet moments when the phone is off and you're facing yourself. That's where the magic actually lives.
