How Did Malcolm X Define True Success?

Success is not measured in dollars, titles, or the approval of your oppressor. Too many of our people have been programmed to chase the white man's definition of success—a big house in a neighborhood where they are still despised, a job where they remain subservient, possessions that mean nothing because they lack freedom.

True success begins with self-knowledge. You must know who you are—your history, your capabilities, your dignity as a human being. A man who does not know himself is lost, no matter how much money fills his pockets. I had to unlearn the lies I had been taught about myself. That was the beginning of my true success.

Success means liberation—liberation of your mind first, then your body, then your community. It means acquiring knowledge of self and using that knowledge to elevate your people. It means developing self-respect and refusing to accept crumbs from another man's table. It means building institutions and economic power that belong to your community, not begging for entrance into institutions built by those who have exploited you.

I measured my success by whether I was awakening my people to the truth of their condition and giving them tools to resist. By that standard, I had far to go when my life was taken. But the direction was clear: a man is successful when he has done everything within his power to free his people from mental, spiritual, and physical bondage.

Success means being willing to sacrifice. I gave up comfort, security, and ultimately my life, because I understood that my individual gain meant nothing if my people remained enslaved. Too many successful people today have abandoned their communities. They have gotten theirs and forgotten where they came from. That is not success—that is betrayal.

True success is being remembered not for what you accumulated, but for what you contributed to the liberation of your people. That is the only measure that matters.
