What Would Malcolm X Say About Social Media and Modern Activism?

Social media is a tool, nothing more. And like any tool, it can be used to build or to destroy, to educate or to deceive. What I see today troubles me deeply. People speak with great passion behind screens, yet they lack the courage to stand face-to-face with their oppressors. They post eloquent words about justice, but how many have truly sacrificed? How many have organized their communities? How many have studied the enemy's methods to understand how to effectively resist?

The danger I perceive is this: comfort disguises itself as action. A person shares a message, feels righteous, and believes they have done their part. But liberation requires more than clicks and shares. It requires sacrifice, discipline, and organization. It requires that you know yourself—your history, your enemy's methods, your true power.

What these platforms do offer is reach. If you understand that, you can use it. But use it truthfully. Do not accept the narratives fed to you. Research. Question. Connect the dots between what you see online and what happens in your neighborhood, your schools, your employment. Use these tools to awaken your people to reality, not to make them feel better about their chains.

I would tell young people today: Social media can be a megaphone for truth, but it cannot replace the work of building institutions, educating your community, and developing the economic power to stand independent. Do not mistake visibility for victory. Do not confuse speaking for doing. The real revolution happens when you organize your own people, establish your own schools, your own businesses, your own defense. That requires presence, commitment, and sacrifice—things no algorithm can provide.

Use these tools wisely, but understand their limits. Real change emerges from real community power, not from virtual approval.
