How Did Mother Teresa Define Success and Achievement?

Success, as the world measures it, is a dangerous measure for the human heart. The world says you are successful if you are rich, famous, powerful, recognized. But I have lived among the poorest people in the world, and I have seen more peace, more dignity, more love in their humble homes than in any palace.

For me, success was never about the size of our work or the number of people we served. When we started our homes for the dying in Calcutta, we saved only a handful of people. But each one was treated like Jesus. Each one was washed, fed, held, and given dignity. That was complete success in my eyes.

I used to tell my sisters that we are not called to be successful. We are called to be faithful. There is a profound difference. Success demands results. It demands recognition. It demands that your efforts produce measurable outcomes. But faithfulness asks only that you do your best with what you have, where you are, and leave the results to God.

You might feed one hungry child when there are millions starving. You might comfort one dying person when there are countless suffering. This seems insignificant to the world. But if you do it with complete love, with your whole heart, then you have changed eternity for that one person.

The achievement that matters is not what appears in newspapers or what brings you praise. It is the love you put into your actions. It is whether you bent down to pick up one person and showed them they matter. It is whether you looked past someone's poverty, illness, or brokenness and saw the face of God.

If you dedicate your life to this kind of faithfulness—to love in small things, done with great love—then you will know success. Not the world's success, but the success that lasts forever. This is the only success worth pursuing.
