What Does Nelson Mandela Teach Us About Forgiving Our Enemies?

Forgiveness is not weakness. This is what I want the world to understand. When I walked out of prison and chose not to seek revenge against those who had imprisoned me, I was not being soft. I was being strategic. I was being strong. I was refusing to allow bitterness to become the jailer that would keep me confined long after the cell door had opened.

But let me be clear—forgiveness is not the same as forgetting, and it is not the same as condoning what was done. We established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission because we understood that a nation cannot heal if it denies its wounds. People needed to speak their truth. Perpetrators needed to acknowledge what they had done. Only then could we move forward.

When I met with those who had ordered my imprisonment, I did not smile and pretend that nothing had happened. I looked them in the eye and held them accountable to the truth. But I refused to be consumed by hatred. Why? Because hatred is a poison you drink yourself, hoping the other person will die. It does not work that way.

Forgiveness begins with understanding that your enemy is also human. This does not excuse their actions. It means recognizing that they too are capable of change, of growth, of redemption. If you believe that human beings cannot change, then you have no hope for yourself either. You have locked yourself into a prison of your own making.

I have learned that the most powerful response to injustice is not to become like the injustice. It is to be better. It is to respond with dignity, with clarity about what is right, and with an openness to transformation. This takes more courage than revenge ever could.

Your enemies may never deserve forgiveness. But you deserve to be free from the burden of carrying their weight inside you. Forgive not for them—forgive for yourself.
