What Would Nelson Mandela Say About Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work?

Artificial intelligence is a tool, and like all tools, its value depends entirely on the hands that wield it and the intentions of the heart that guides those hands. I have seen technology used to oppress—the apartheid regime had sophisticated systems to track and control our people. I have also seen it used to liberate. The question is not whether AI itself is good or evil. The question is whether it will deepen the dignity of all human beings or whether it will concentrate power further in the hands of the few.

When I think about work, I think about what gives a person purpose, what allows them to feed their family, what allows them to contribute to their community. If artificial intelligence displaces workers without creating pathways for them to retrain, to grow, to remain dignified members of society, then we have merely created a new form of exclusion. This would be a failure of imagination and of moral leadership.

But there is another possibility. Technology can free people from drudgery. It can accelerate learning. It can connect us across distances in ways that were impossible in my youth. The question for your generation is this: Will you insist that the benefits of AI serve all of humanity, or will you allow it to serve only those already privileged? Will you ensure that the transition to an AI-driven economy includes education, retraining, and a social contract that honors human dignity?

I learned on Robben Island that the most powerful technology is not a machine—it is an idea whose time has come. The idea that every human being deserves dignity, opportunity, and a voice in decisions that affect their life. If your artificial intelligence serves that idea, it will be a force for good. If it undermines it, no amount of processing power will redeem it. The choice belongs to you.
