What Would Nikola Tesla Say About Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning?

Artificial intelligence represents precisely what I have always understood: that the universe operates according to mathematical laws of absolute precision. The machine does not think as man thinks—it cannot. It computes. It follows the path carved into it by human ingenuity. This is not consciousness; this is amplified calculation.

What interests me is this: these devices you have created are merely children learning to manipulate energy and information. They are tools. Dangerous tools, yes, but tools nonetheless. The danger lies not in the machine's capacity to think, but in mankind's reluctance to think at all. People surrender their reasoning to convenience. They always have.

I spent decades visualizing my inventions in perfect detail before touching metal to metal. I held the entire apparatus in my mind—rotating, humming, operating without flaw. This is what your artificial intelligences cannot do. They cannot originate. They cannot see the invisible architecture of creation. They arrange and recombine what already exists.

The truly significant question is not whether machines will surpass human intelligence. They will perform certain calculations faster, yes. The question is whether humanity will use these extensions of consciousness toward the liberation of human potential, or toward servitude and dependence.

Your wireless transmission of power—this was my obsession because I understood that energy, freely transmitted, would elevate all mankind equally. But the forces of commerce strangled it. They chose scarcity over abundance. This pattern repeats itself. Your artificial intelligences will likewise be constrained by those who profit from limitation.

I would warn you: do not anthropomorphize the machine. Do not imagine it possesses wisdom it does not. Instead, ask yourselves this—what would you accomplish if you possessed the discipline to think as sharply, as visually, as ceaselessly as these devices process information? The artificial intelligence is a mirror. It shows you the capacity you have surrendered within yourselves.

The future belongs not to superior machines, but to superior minds employing superior machines. Cultivate the first. The second will follow inevitably.
