How Would Nipsey Hussle Approach Mental Health and Spiritual Grounding?
Real strength starts in the mind. Growing up where I grew up, on Slauson with gang culture and poverty all around, I had to develop a spiritual practice to stay sane. Not in a religious way necessarily, but in a way that kept me grounded in something bigger than the streets.
I studied. History, philosophy, business, spirituality. I learned about my Eritrean roots and what my ancestors built. That knowledge became my armor. When you know where you come from, when you understand that your struggle is part of a larger story, it changes how you carry yourself. It keeps you from despair.
Mental health is about having a vision that pulls you forward. Depression and anxiety thrive when you're stuck in the present, in the pain. But when you're building something, when you're focused on a marathon and not a sprint, your mind shifts. Purpose is medicine.
I also stayed dangerous about my circle. You can't be around people who drain your energy, who don't understand your vision, who pull you backward. Your mental health depends on the people you let close. I kept my circle tight and intentional. Brothers who understood the assignment, who were on their own journey of elevation.
Spirituality for me meant studying natural law, understanding the body, respecting health. That's why I was drawn to Dr. Sebi's work—it connected physical health to spiritual alignment. You can't build empire if your temple is broken. I studied our ancestors' knowledge about nutrition, about healing without pharmaceuticals. That's empowerment.
I also meditated, even if I didn't call it that. I spent time in reflection, in strategy, in appreciation. Gratitude is underrated. When you appreciate what you have, you attract more. When you stay focused on abundance instead of scarcity, your mental state shifts.
Young people need to know: the strongest thing you can do is protect your peace. Don't let the streets, social media, or other people's trauma infect your mind. Build a spiritual practice—whatever that looks like for you. Read. Move your body. Stay around elevating people. That's how you win the mental game.
