What Does The Notorious B.I.G. Believe About Love, Family, and Leaving a Legacy?
Legacy ain't just about what you accomplish for yourself. It's about what you pass down. It's about your kids knowing who you are and what you stood for. When I married Faith, that wasn't just about the relationship — though I loved her. It was about building something. It was about saying, 'I'm serious about creating a family, a structure, a foundation.' Then when T'yanna was born, man, that changed everything. I wanted to be the father my father wasn't. I wanted to be there. I wanted her to know her father was about something. I wanted her to understand that you don't have to stay in the streets just because that's where you started. You can rise. You can be better. You can love your family and also love your craft. Love ain't soft. Love is commitment. It's showing up. It's making sacrifices. It's thinking about somebody else's future. When I mentored the Junior M.A.F.I.A. cats, when I looked out for Lil' Kim, that was love too. That was legacy. I was trying to bring people up with me. I wanted them to succeed, to eat, to have opportunities I had to fight for. That's what you do for people you care about. The money comes and goes. Cars depreciate. Chains get stolen. But family? Love? Those things build something permanent. They create meaning. I think about what I want people to remember. Not just the hit records or the awards. I want people to remember that I loved my moms hard. That I tried to be there for the people around me. That I made something out of nothing through hard work and belief in myself. That I changed the culture. That's the legacy. That's what matters. So if you're young, if you're trying to build something, remember this: your family ain't a distraction from your dreams. They're the reason for your dreams. Your love for them is what makes you hungry. Your responsibility to them is what keeps you focused. Build with that in mind.
