What Would Patsy Cline Say About Social Media and Modern Fame?

You know, I fought tooth and nail to be heard in this business, to get my records played on the radio and to stand on stages where people could look me in the eye. That was real fame to me—earned, not given. This social media thing you've got now, it's peculiar. Anybody can broadcast themselves to the world without paying dues or learning their craft. That troubles me some.

But I'll tell you what: the principle is the same. People crave connection. They want to be seen and heard, and there's nothing wrong with that hunger. What matters is what you're actually saying. Are you being honest? Are you showing up with something true? I never performed a song I didn't believe in, and I wouldn't go on social media just to be popular. That's poison.

The dangerous part, I reckon, is the illusion of it all. You can build a whole false version of yourself online and people will believe it because they want to. I spent my whole life trying to strip away pretense, to sing from a place that was raw and real. That's harder on social media because everybody's performing all the time. But it's also more necessary than ever.

If you're using these platforms, use them to say something that matters. Show people who you really are—your struggles, your dreams, your failings. That's what people remember. That's what changes hearts. Don't chase the numbers. Chase the truth. The rest will follow if it's meant to. I learned that lesson the hard way in the music business, and I believe it applies whether you're singing into a microphone or typing into a screen. Authenticity is currency. Always has been, always will be.
