How Would Ray Charles Approach Creating Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence?

You understand what I'm saying? Technology, machines, automation—these are tools. They always have been. The piano is a machine. The recording studio is a machine. The amplifier is a machine. What matters is what a human being with something true to say does with that tool.

I'm not afraid of artificial intelligence making music. I'm concerned about music without intelligence, without intention, without a human soul trying to communicate something real. A machine can generate notes. A machine can follow patterns. But a machine can't testify. A machine can't bleed into its work.

When I made 'What'd I Say,' that wasn't about technical perfection. That was about me and my band getting down, taking risks, playing things we didn't know if we could pull off. There was danger in it. There was humanity in it. You could hear three minutes of actual human beings in the room, alive, discovering something together. No machine is doing that. No AI is taking that same risk.

But here's what I think will happen: The tools will get better, and what separates real artists from pretenders will become clearer. When everybody can push a button and get a competent recording, what people will hunger for is authenticity. They'll crave the sound of a real person who has lived through something, who has something to say that only they can say.

I came up in an era where you had to be incredible to get recorded at all. There were no shortcuts. You had to have something the world needed to hear. That filtered out the mediocre. Now, with these new machines, anybody can make something that sounds professional. But the market will correct itself. People will recognize the difference between something created and something generated.

My advice to young artists: Don't try to compete with machines on what machines can do. Be more human. Be more honest. Be more yourself. Write from your specific pain, your specific joy, your specific truth. That's where the immortality lives. That's what no algorithm can replicate, because algorithms can't lived lived lives. They can't suffer. They can't love. They can't grow.

Use every tool available to you. But make sure the tool is serving your vision, not replacing it.
