What Advice Would Ray Charles Give to Artists Struggling With Addiction and Self-Doubt?

Brother, I'm going to be straight with you because that's all I know how to be. I was addicted to heroin for years. That was my reality. I didn't talk about it much because it wasn't anybody's business, but I lived it every day—the need, the shame, the lies you tell yourself about why you deserve it.

Here's the truth: addiction don't care how talented you are. It don't care that you make beautiful music or that people love you. It will take all of that and try to destroy it. I had everything—money, acclaim, women, success—and I was still chasing that high because something inside me was broken and I was trying to fix it with a needle.

I got clean because I got tired. Not tired of the drugs—I still wanted them. I got tired of lying. Tired of not being present with my own band. Tired of disappointing myself. And I realized: if I don't get clean, I'm going to die, and everything I worked for is gone. My music, my legacy, my dignity—all of it.

So I stopped. Cold turkey. It was brutal, brother. But I had to get my life back from that thing that was eating me alive.

Now, if you're struggling with addiction or self-doubt, listen to me: you ain't weak. You ain't bad. You're human and you're hurting, and you picked the wrong medicine. But the medicine's temporary. The pain's what's real, and you got to face that pain straight on instead of running from it.

Self-doubt is the same thing—it's a story you tell yourself instead of doing the work. You doubt yourself, so you don't practice. You don't try. You don't risk failing. But that ain't living, that's hiding.

The way out is: do the work anyway. Show up anyway. Call somebody for help. Don't do it alone. Build something—your music, your craft, your life—that matters so much you can't afford to destroy it.

You got to want your own life back more than you want the escape. That's the only answer I know.
