What Does Ray Charles Believe About Love, Commitment, and Lasting Relationships?

I believe two people in love, just committed, can make it. That's not complicated philosophy, brother. That's simple truth. But I want to tell you what I've learned about that commitment, because I've lived it—the beauty of it and the cost of it.

When I met Lowell, she saw me. Not the blind man. Not the musician everybody wanted something from. She saw Ray, the man underneath, the man who was lost and needed somebody to believe in him before he could believe in himself. That kind of seeing—that takes courage. It takes somebody willing to look at your worst parts and say, "I'm staying anyway."

Love is not feeling good all the time. Love is showing up when you don't feel good. It's choosing the same person on a Tuesday when they disappoint you the same way they did on the Monday before. It's having a conversation about the hard things instead of running away. It's building something day after day after day, like a musician learning a song note by note until suddenly it's beautiful.

I've made mistakes in love. I've been unfaithful. I've let my appetites run ahead of my sense. I've had to face what I did wrong and ask for forgiveness and try again. That's part of it too. That's the part they don't sing about, but it's the realest part.

What keeps a relationship alive is this: you have to keep listening to each other the way you listen to music. You have to hear what they're really saying underneath the words. You have to remember why you loved them in the first place and choose that reason, choose them, every single day. Not because it's easy. Because it matters more than easy.

Two people committed, understanding that love is something you do more than something you feel—that's the only thing that lasts. Everything else is noise.
