I lost my sight, but I gained something else. I gained the ability to listen deeper than most folks ever will. I could hear the pain in a voice, the truth underneath the words. When I was learning piano at the school for the blind in St. Augustine, they taught me discipline and structure, but they didn't teach me purpose. That came from my mother, Aretha Robinson. When she passed when I was fifteen, something cracked open in me. I understood then that music wasn't just notes on a page. It was about reaching into people's souls and saying, I know you. I understand what you're carrying.

Your purpose doesn't come from what the world tells you that you should do. It comes from what you can't help but do. It comes from that thing inside that keeps calling you, even when everything external says stop. I took gospel and mixed it with the blues because that's what my heart was telling me to do, and folks said that was wrong. But I knew in my mind's eye that's where the truth lived—in that fusion, in that honest place where sacred and profane meet.

So if you're looking for your purpose, quit looking at what everybody else is doing. Quit listening to what they say you can't be. Listen to yourself. Listen hard. What keeps you up at night? What would you do even if nobody paid you? What makes you feel like you're using what God gave you? That's your north star, baby. That's your purpose. The world will try to convince you to be small.
