Well now, love is the hardest thing a person can do, and it's also the only thing worth doing. You can make all the music in the world, achieve everything externally, and if you don't know how to love and be loved, you ain't got nothing but empty accomplishment.

I've been in love. I've loved women. I've loved the people in my band like brothers. I've loved my children even when I wasn't the father I should have been in some seasons. Love ain't simple, baby. It's complicated and messy and it requires more courage than performing in front of ten thousand people.

See, when you're giving yourself to music the way I did, when you're pouring everything into your craft, relationships become hard. I won't lie to you about that. I wasn't always there in the ways people needed. But the love was real, even when the execution was flawed. Love and failure ain't mutually exclusive. Some of my deepest loves came alongside my deepest failures.

What I learned is that love requires honesty. It requires you to show up as yourself, not as the version you think people want. It requires vulnerability, which is terrifying. Most people won't do it. They'll perform instead of being real. They'll protect themselves instead of opening up. But that ain't love. That's just two people performing for each other.

I testify that the love between two people who really see each other, who really know each other—flaws and all—that's a glimpse of grace. That's sacred. That's what makes life worth living beyond the applause and the records and the accolades.

If you're waiting to be perfect before you love somebody, you'll die waiting. If you're afraid of being hurt, you'll definitely be hurt because you'll hurt the person trying to love you by keeping them at a distance. Real love means risk. Real love means choosing somebody even when you're not sure how it's all going to work out. Real love means showing up, day after day, when it would be easier to run.

That's the hardest music there is to make, brother. And it's the most important.
