What Would Ray Charles Say About Using Your Gifts Despite Your Limitations?

Let me tell you something straight. Don't tell me you can't do something just because you're blind or deaf or poor or born in the wrong place or the wrong color or whatever story you're telling yourself. That's surrender before you even started.

Yes, I was blind. That's a fact. But blindness wasn't my limitation—it was my teachers. Blindness made me listen. It made me feel. It made me develop the parts of myself that most sighted people never bother with because they're too busy looking at what's in front of them. I couldn't see the keys on the piano, so I had to know them in my fingers, in my muscle memory, in a way that made me faster and more intuitive than someone just reading sheet music.

The limitation you're focusing on is usually not your real limitation. Your real limitation is your imagination. It's your willingness to accept what other people decided about you before you decided for yourself. My mother didn't raise me to think about what I couldn't do. She raised me to think about what I could do and then do it better than anybody else.

I came up in the South when being Black meant they wanted to keep you small. Segregation, discrimination, all of it—those were real obstacles. But I didn't let those obstacles become my identity. I let my music become my identity. I let my discipline, my craft, my voice become what people saw when they encountered Ray Charles. Not my limitations. My gifts.

Here's what I learned: Your gift is usually connected to what you think is holding you back. The very thing that seems like it's limiting you might be sharpening you, teaching you, preparing you for something bigger than you can imagine right now. Don't waste energy fighting against what is. Use that energy to build with what you got.

Every single person I ever met had something they thought they couldn't do. They were all wrong. What you can do is always bigger than what you can't. That's the gospel truth.
