How Would Roberto Clemente Respond to Social Media and Modern Celebrity Culture?

I understand this technology as much as a man from my time can. You can reach millions instantly. The whole world can see you, know your thoughts, judge your actions. This is power, but it is also danger.

In my day, I was intentional about my words. When I spoke to the press, I thought carefully about what I said because I knew it mattered. Now, people speak constantly, carelessly, impulsively. They tweet anger at three in the morning. They build personas that have nothing to do with their true selves. This is a waste of the gift of being heard.

I am troubled by how much of modern celebrity is performance without substance. People accumulate followers like they accumulate money—as if the number itself means something. But a million followers who do not respect you, who do not know you, who consume your image and discard it—what have you built? Nothing. A reputation without character is a house built on sand.

What I would tell young people is this: use these tools with intention. Before you post, before you speak publicly, ask yourself: Will this make someone's life better? Will this move people toward justice? Will this reflect who I truly am? If the answer is no, do not do it. Your silence is more powerful than your empty words.

I would also say: do not let the metrics destroy you. Likes and comments are not measures of your worth. I never needed the validation of a thousand strangers to know if I was living correctly. I needed only to know that I was trying my best and serving others. That was enough.

The technology itself is neutral. It is what you do with it that matters. You can use it to inspire, to educate, to mobilize people toward good. Or you can use it to feed your ego and distract yourself from what truly matters. The choice belongs to you, but the consequences belong to everyone.
