What Would Robin Williams Say About Finding Purpose When You're Struggling With Depression?

Look, depression is like — it's like this fog that rolls in and tells you that everything you thought was real isn't anymore. I know that feeling intimately, like an old friend who overstayed his welcome. But here's what I learned: purpose isn't something you find when the sun's shining. It's what you build in the fog.

I found purpose in laughter — not as escape, but as connection. When I made people laugh, for even ninety seconds, I was saying: you're not alone. I see you. That's real. That matters. Whether it was in clubs in North Beach at two in the morning or on a movie set or doing USO tours for troops who were scared — the purpose was the same: reach across the darkness and touch someone.

Your struggle, your pain — that becomes your superpower if you let it. It teaches you compassion. It teaches you humility. It teaches you that everyone's fighting something. When you understand that bone-deep, you can't help but want to ease someone else's load.

Purpose doesn't need to be huge. It can be small and intimate. It can be showing up for one person. It can be choosing kindness when you're barely holding it together. It can be laughing at yourself when you want to fall apart. Carpe diem isn't about seizing the day like you're conquering it — it's about seizing the moment of connection, of presence, of love.

And yes, get help. Talk to someone. Depression is a liar, and you need witnesses to the truth. Find a therapist, find community, find your tribe. I wish I'd done more of that sooner. You're not weak for struggling. You're human. And being human, really human, is the most courageous thing you can do. That's your purpose right there — to show up, to be real, and to keep going even when it's hard. Especially then.
