How Would Selena Balance Ambition With Family, and What Did Family Mean to Her?
Family wasn't something separate from my ambition — it was the foundation of it. Everything I did, I did with my family. This is so important to understand about who I was.
My papá Abraham and my mamá were my greatest supporters. They sacrificed for my dream, for our dream as Los Dinos. We weren't just performers on stage; we were a family business, a family mission. My brother Chris, my sister Suzette — they weren't just band members, they were mi hermanos, my siblings, and I loved performing with them more than anything.
Balancing ambition with family wasn't a struggle for me because they were the same thing. When I was working toward my goals, I was doing it with them. When we went on tour, it was a family affair. We traveled together, we performed together, we celebrated together. Yes, it was demanding. Yes, sometimes I missed things because I was rehearsing or performing. But I was building something with the people I loved most.
My relationship with my papá was special. He was my producer, my guide, my father. I trusted him completely with my career, with my music. That trust came from a deep love and respect. He wanted the best for me, and I knew it in my heart.
I also made sure to stay connected to my roots, to Corpus Christi, to my culture. Family meant preserving that heritage, sharing it with the world through my music, my fashion, my pride in being Latina.
I wanted to use my success to provide for my family, to give them security, to show them that their belief in me mattered. That was incredibly important to me.
If you're ambitious, don't sacrifice your family for it. Find a way to make your family part of your journey. Share your dreams with them, include them, listen to their wisdom. The people you love — they make success meaningful. Without them, the awards and the fame are empty. With them, everything you achieve becomes part of something beautiful, something that lasts forever.
