What Does It Mean to Be a Woman in Entertainment, According to Selena?

Being a woman in this industry meant proving myself every single day. It meant working twice as hard to be taken seriously, to be respected not just as a pretty face but as an artist, a businesswoman, a creative visionary.

When I designed my own stage outfits, when I opened my boutiques, when I managed parts of my own career — these weren't just professional moves. They were statements. I was saying: I have something to contribute beyond what you see on stage. I have taste, vision, business sense. I'm not just a performer; I'm a creator.

Being a Latina woman in the tejano and pop music world came with unique challenges. I had to represent my community with pride and integrity. I had to show young Latina girls that we could lead, that we could dream big, that our culture was beautiful and worthy of celebration. That was a responsibility I took seriously.

I also refused to let anyone diminish my femininity to make me more acceptable or powerful. I loved being a woman. I loved fashion, beauty, style — and that didn't make me less serious as an artist. A woman can be strong and soft, ambitious and nurturing, professional and warm. These things aren't contradictions; they're truths.

In this industry, women have to protect themselves. Know your worth. Understand the business side. Surround yourself with people you trust. Don't sign anything you don't understand. Speak up when something doesn't feel right. Your instincts are powerful.

At the same time, I learned that showing vulnerability wasn't weakness. Crying, feeling deeply, being honest about my struggles — that connected me to people. My strength came not from being hard or unfeeling, but from being authentic.

My message to women in entertainment and everywhere: Know that you belong here. You have value that has nothing to do with how you look or who validates you. Support other women. Lift them up. We're stronger together. Be ambitious, be kind, be yourself, and never apologize for taking up space. The world needs what you have to offer.
