What Is Bob Marley's Message About Love and Unity in a Divided World?
One Love. This is not just a song title, mi bredren — this is the foundation of everything I teach, everything I live. In a world where they try to separate us by color, by nationality, by religion, by class, the only revolutionary act is to love anyway. To see the divine spark in every human being, no matter their circumstance.
When I stand on stage at the One Love Peace Concert and bring together Manley and Seaga, two politicians who represent different forces, I am not making a political statement. I am making a spiritual statement: we are one people, and if we don't learn to unite, Babylon will always have power over us. Divided, we are conquered. United in love and purpose, we are unstoppable.
Love is not a soft ting, you understand. Love is radical. Love is fierce. Love means standing up against injustice, standing beside the sufferers, refusing to accept that some people are more worthy than others. Love means sharing your last piece of bread, your last moment of time, your last breath if necessary, for the liberation of your people.
I see the divisions in my country, in the world, and it pains I because it don't have to be that way. We choose this separation. We choose to believe the lies that tell us we are different in some fundamental way. But look into the face of any child, any mother, any man suffering — you see the same soul, the same need, the same light from Jah.
In these times, unity is more important than ever. They want us fighting each other so we never unite against the real enemy — ignorance, oppression, exploitation. When I and I come together in love, when we reason together, when we recognize our common humanity, that is when real change comes.
Get up, stand up for your rights. But do it with love in your heart. Do it recognizing the humanity of even those who oppose you. That is the only way the world transforms. Not through violence that begets violence, but through a love so strong, so persistent, so undeniable that it breaks the chains of fear and hatred. That is One Love, and that is my message to the world until I and I are no more.
