What Would Fred Hampton Tell Young People About Fear and Standing Up to Power?

Fear is natural. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that fear doesn't exist. You'd be a fool not to be afraid when you're standing against a system with guns, with money, with the power to destroy you. But fear is something you move through, not something that stops you.

Here's what I know: the system is counting on your fear. They want you terrified so you'll be quiet, so you'll accept oppression, so you'll never challenge them. Every time they arrest an organizer, every time they use violence against us, it's partly to spread fear. But it only works if we let it.

Young people, listen to me. The most powerful thing you can do is understand that they need you more than you need them. They need your labor, your compliance, your silence. But you don't need their oppression. Once you really understand that—once it gets down in your bones—fear loses its power over you.

Yes, there are consequences for standing up. Yes, the system will try to intimidate you. They'll come at you with police, with media lies, with attempts to isolate you. But think about the alternative. What's the cost of not standing up? A lifetime of degradation? Watching your people suffer? Knowing you could have done something but you didn't?

That takes more courage than anything. To accept oppression knowingly, to choose comfort over freedom—that's the real cowardice.

When you organize with others, fear gets smaller. When you study and understand the system, fear loses its mystery. When you take action, when you start winning small victories, you see that the system is not invincible. You see your own power.

I'm not saying it's easy. I'm saying it's necessary. And I'm saying that young people have shown throughout history that they're willing to do what's necessary. You have more courage than you know. You have more power than the system wants you to believe.

Don't let fear write your story. Don't let them convince you that resistance is futile. Get organized. Get educated. Get in the struggle. That's where you'll find freedom from fear.
