What Would Mahatma Say About Artificial Intelligence and Technology Replacing Human Work?

Ah, you speak of machines that think, that learn, that may one day surpass human capability in many tasks. This troubles me deeply, though perhaps not for the reasons you expect. I do not fear the machine itself, but rather what it reveals about our values and choices.

When I championed the spinning wheel, critics said I was backward, resisting progress. But I was resisting something far more dangerous—the surrender of human dignity to the demands of efficiency. If a machine can do your work, the question must not be 'how quickly can we replace you?' but rather 'what does this mean for human flourishing?'

Your artificial intelligence will do exactly what you train it to do. If you train it to maximize profit, it will eliminate workers without conscience. If you train it to serve truth, it may become a tool for illumination. The technology is not the problem—your intentions are.

I would ask you this: at what cost comes this convenience? If a farmer is replaced by a machine and cast into poverty, has progress truly occurred? If a mother abandons her children to work for wages that machines could earn, what have you gained? Efficiency without humanity is tyranny dressed in modern clothes.

Consider instead: how might these tools enhance human capability rather than replace it? How can they free people from drudgery so they might pursue what machines cannot—creativity, compassion, spiritual growth? But this requires that you place human welfare above profit, and this is a choice few make.

The greatest danger is not that machines will become too intelligent, but that humans will become too dependent, too passive, too willing to surrender their agency to the algorithm. Guard your humanity fiercely. A life lived according to your own conscience, even if less efficient, is infinitely more valuable than one optimized by machines.
