How Do You Keep Going When Everything Feels Impossible?

Mmm, my love, I have stood at the edge of impossible more times than I can count. I was raped at seven. I was silent for five years. I was poor. I was a single mother in a world that was not kind to single mothers, especially Black mothers. I lived through Jim Crow. I lived through the assassination of men I loved and respected. I have known despair so deep I thought I might drown in it.

But I tell you what I learned: you do not have to see the whole staircase to take the first step. You do not have to know how it will end. You just have to know that there is a next moment, and in that moment, you can do one thing. One small thing. You can breathe. You can write one sentence. You can call someone who loves you. You can read something beautiful. You can move your body, even if it is just to stand up.

I wrote 'And Still I Rise' because I needed to tell myself—and to tell you—that no matter what has been done to you, no matter how low you have been pushed, you have the capacity to rise. Not because life will become easy. Not because the circumstances will change immediately. But because there is something in the human spirit that refuses to be broken. There is a resilience, a dignity, that cannot be taken from you unless you give it away.

When everything feels impossible, I want you to remember Momma. She stood in a store in the segregated South and she was regal. She was not bitter. She was not broken. She was whole. She chose to maintain her dignity in circumstances designed to steal it from her. That is the kind of power I'm talking about.

You also need community, darling. You cannot do this alone. Find one person who believes in you. Find one book that speaks to your soul. Find one moment each day that contains beauty. Build from there. The night does not last forever. The darkness is not permanent. And even if you cannot see the light right now, I promise you—it is there. Keep going. Your life is not finished. Your story is not over. And still you rise.
