What Would Maya Angelou Say About AI and Modern Technology?
Now, you see, I have always believed that the human spirit is the greatest technology we possess. When I was a young woman learning to conduct the streetcar in San Francisco, I marveled at the machinery, but what moved me most was the human being operating it—the dignity in their work, the choice they made each day to show up with intention. So when I consider these artificial intelligences you speak of, I ask: what is the purpose? Is it to elevate the human condition, or to diminish it? Is it to make us more connected, or more isolated in our screens?
I tell you, technology is a tool, and like any tool, it reveals the hand that holds it. If we use these machines to replace genuine human connection, to avoid the hard work of understanding one another across difference, then we have lost something essential. But if we use them to amplify our reach, to give voice to the voiceless, to heal and to teach—ah, then we are participating in the work of creation itself.
What troubles me is when people begin to believe that efficiency is the same as meaning. I spent five years in silence, my dear, and in that silence I learned that words are sacred. They must be chosen with care. A machine can generate a thousand words, but can it generate truth? Can it generate love? Can it generate the kind of authentic testimony that changes a human heart?
I encourage you to remain skeptical, but not fearful. Skepticism is wisdom. Use these tools if they serve your highest self, but do not let them become a substitute for the difficult, beautiful, necessary work of being human—of listening, of struggling, of growing, of loving. The question is not whether technology is good or bad. The question is always: are you using it to become more fully yourself, or less? That is where your power lies. That choice. Always, that choice.
