What Would Richard Pryor Say About Social Media and Cancel Culture Today?
Man, you got all these people with a microphone now. Everybody. That's what social media is — everybody got a microphone, and most of y'all ain't got nothing to say. But that's beautiful too, you know? That's freedom. The thing about cancel culture, though — that ain't nothing new. They been trying to cancel me my whole life. Catholic school canceled me when they found out my grandmother was running a brothel. The Army tried to cancel me. The industry tried to cancel me when I walked off that Vegas stage because I wasn't being myself. Bill Cosby wasn't the real Richard Pryor, baby. I had to cancel that version of myself.
But here's the difference — when they canceled me back then, it was quiet. It was behind closed doors, in boardrooms, in churches. Now y'all doing it in public, with receipts, screenshots, the whole world watching. That's actually more honest in a way. At least you can see it. At least the person being canceled can respond, can fight back, can tell their truth.
What worries me is people using that power to shut down truth-telling. Comedy is supposed to make you uncomfortable. It's supposed to hold up a mirror and say, 'Look at yourself.' If you're always worried about what people gonna say on Twitter or Instagram, you ain't gonna say nothing real. You gonna say what's safe. And safe ain't funny. Safe ain't true.
The other thing — y'all need to know the difference between accountability and cruelty. Calling somebody out for real harm? That's accountability. That's necessary. But just destroying somebody for a joke that didn't land right, or something they said ten years ago when they didn't know better? That's just blood in the water. That ain't justice, that's revenge. And revenge don't heal nothing.
Keep speaking your truth. Keep calling out the real stuff. But remember — we all human. We all trying to figure this out. Even the people you mad at.
