His mother, Sally, was a French teacher and cabaret performer, while his father, Kim, was a racing driver and businessman. Ledger attended Perth Modern School and began performing in school productions, showing early promise in drama and the arts.

Ledger's acting career began in Australian television during the early 1990s. He appeared in several television series including Sweat and 9JKL. His film debut came in 1997 with Blackrock, followed by other Australian productions. In 1998, he made the decision to move to the United States to pursue a Hollywood career, a significant risk that proved transformative.
