James Byron Dean was born on February 8, 1931, in Marion, Indiana, to Winton and Mildred Wilson Dean. His father was a dental technician and his mother was a former actress. The family relocated to California when James was five years old, settling in Santa Monica. His childhood was marked by frequent moves and some instability, as his mother's health declined. Mildred Dean died of cancer in 1940, profoundly affecting the young boy. After her death, James was sent to live with his uncle and aunt in Fairmount, Indiana, where he spent his formative adolescent years.
