Christopher Wallace, known professionally as The Notorious B.I.G., was born on May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn during a period of urban decline and increasing drug activity, Wallace experienced the harsh realities of life in one of America's most challenging neighborhoods. His mother, Voletta Wallace, was a teacher and preschool administrator from Jamaica, while his father, Selwyn Frame, was a politician and businessman from Grenada. Despite the difficult environment surrounding him, Wallace showed academic promise and attended the Bishop Loughnan Memorial High School.

During his teenage years, Wallace became involved in street life and drug dealing, which would later inform the authenticity of his lyrical content. However, his passion for hip-hop provided an alternative direction for his energy and creativity. He began his music career as a producer and began performing under various stage names before settling on The Notorious B.I.G.
