Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas, to Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcela Quintanilla. She was the youngest of three children in a Mexican-American family with deep musical roots. Her father, a musician and entrepreneur, recognized his children's musical talents early and began teaching them to perform together. Growing up in a bilingual household, Selena became fluent in both English and Spanish, a skill that would prove instrumental to her career.

Selena's professional music career began in childhood as part of the family band Selena y Los Dinos, which was formed in 1981. Initially performing at family events and local venues in Texas, the band gradually built a following throughout South Texas and northern Mexico.
